Ruth

 There is ONE God

Ruth knew that there is ONE GOD.

Written by Mona Edwards

Ruth, Ruth,
She knew the truth.
She knew that there is one God.

Ruth, Ruth,

Malachi

Malachi

There was a prophet.
There was a prophet.
His name was Malachi.
His name was Malachi.

God told Malachi
God told Malachi
some things to say.
some things to say.

God was not  happy
God was not happy
with the Israelite people
with the Israelite people
because they didn't mind him.
because they didn't mind him.

But God still loved
But God still loved
the Israelite people.
the Israelite people.

God does not change.
God does not change.
God always wants
God always wants
us to love him back.
us to love him back.

God made everything.
God made everything.
He even made me.
He even made me.

Ezra

Credit:  https://www.freebibleimages.org/illustrations/ezra/

Introduction:

In our story today, Ezra tears up his clothes. (Let kids tear up some raggedy clothes you brought for this.  You need to cut the clothes so that they will tear easier.)

Ezra also pulled out his hair from his head and beard!!  We're not going to do that, but let's see WHY Ezra would have done these things.

Story Song:

I selected and printed seven pictures from  the third set of Ezra pictures that would go with  the text and song I wrote for this story.  I printed the text and glued it to the appropriate pictures I had used.  (You have creative commons permission to use this file, but not to publish it for profit.)

Songs Used:

There are Yes People

 One God Song

Ezra, Ezra

He knew the truth.

He knew that there is one God.

Additional Resources:

There aren't many resources  available in print, on aps, videos, or Youtube about Ezra that are age appropriate for preschool. So --

  • I will introduce Jonah also in order to discuss that Jonah was a "No" person and Ezra was a "yes" person.  Also the Israelites had been "No" people too in the Ezra story.
  • Will also introduce John 14:15 (NIV) as memory verse.
Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commands."

Fruit of the Spirit LOVE bag--full of things we love.*

Vocabulary:

  • beard - Show one of the pictures of Ezra and ask a student to point to his beard.
  • love - memory verse, what love looks like, Fruit of the Spirit LOVE bag (above)
  • scroll --
    • compare to contemporary bible appearance
    • Give out small scrolls with John 14:15 memory verse on it
    • Practice saying John 14:15 in class using an 8.5 x 11" "scroll"

*I made a set of these bags and filled them with small things to illustrate the Fruit of the Spirit.  (Of course the search for additional items is ongoing.) The first set with lots of goodies in the bags were lost in our church fire.  This is the replacement set.   Eventually I will have more items in each bag.  For example, I "need" a mommy, daddy, pets, etc.  The search is fun.  Really, how many people do you know who are looking for little objects to go in Fruit of the Spirit bags?  Maybe you will be too.  With that in mind, I am including a picture of the bags I have now.

Jonah Songs

 JONAH Song

This was written by Iona Shackelford.

(Shake finger:  JONAH SHOULD HAVE OBEYED)

 Jonah was a preacher,
and God told him one day.
“Jonah, go a-preaching.
Folks need to know my way.”

Jonah said, “Oh, No!”
And ran away to hide
Out on a sailing ship
Out on the ocean wide!
JONAH SHOULD HAVE OBEYED!!

God made up a great big storm.
The winds went “Woo - oo - oo”.
Jonah told the sailors
just what they should do.

They threw him in the sea
with a great big swish!
And down in that deep water
he was swallowed by a fish!
JONAH SHOULD HAVE OBEYED!!

Jonah learned a lesson.
He really had a scare.
He learned he couldn’t hide
from God who’s everywhere.

 God told that big fish
to put Jonah on dry land.
Jonah was so glad!
Now he could understand…
IT’S BEST TO OBEY!!!

     There are NO people.
    There are NO people.
There are NO people who say,
“NO, I WON’T do the right thing!  NO! Not today!”

     Jonah :

    Jonah was a NO person
a NO person, a NO person
    Jonah was a NO person
    who said (to God),
"No, I won't do the right thing!  I'll run away"

Tower of Babel, Genesis 11

Tower of Babel, Genesis 11

Digital Resources

  • Storytellers:  Tower of Babel
  • Tower of Babel by Saddleback Kids
  •  The Beginner's Bible App  Stories:  The Tall Tower (This app is good for several reasons.  As the text is read, each word is highlighted, so it's excellent for beginning readers.  This is an app version of The Beginner's Bible, so it's good to have the printed book for kids to use at home too. In class we wait until the text has been read and then take turns with the interactive parts.)

    FARM animals

Make different animal sounds.  Ask, "What animal makes that sound?"  Ask, "Do you know what the animal is saying?"  Point:  We don't understand animals, what if we suddenly couldn't understand other people?

Note:  I didn’t realize I hadn’t prepared for this enough.  I knew I had 2 buckets of little animals at church and thought I would just pull out some of them and talk about what they “said”.  First animal was a giraffe, next was a deer, and most of the others just said, “ROAR!”  It’s good to use FARM animals.

    Legos and Blocks

While the children are building towers as tall as they can, ask them questions, wait for their answers, and then discuss.

    • Do you need to use your hands (eyes, arms) to make this tower?  Yes?  Who gave you your hands?  God did?

    • Do you need light?  Who made the light?  God did on Day 1.

Point:  God provided all I needed.  AND He provided all the people building the tower needed.  They thought they did it all by themselves!

Share if you can expand on this or have additional ideas.

    Song(s)

    The Tower of Babel
    Genesis 11
Tune:  On Top of Old Smoky

We’ll build a great city from bricks that we bake.
All of the world will think we are great!
We’ll build a tall tower that reaches the sky.
All of the world will see just how high.

    All good things come
     from God up above,
But we don’t even thank him.
    It’s all about us.
    ***********************
    Uh-OH!
So God changed the way they talked and discussed.

    ***************************

    Tower of Babel Song
Tune:  He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands

In the whole world they talked the same.
In the whole world they talked the same.
In the whole world they talked the same.
They were proud and forgot about God.

We’ll build a tower to the sky from brick we make.
We’ll build a tower to the sky from brick we make.
We’ll build a tower to the sky from brick we make.
They were proud and forgot about God.

We’ll build a great big city from bricks we make.
We’ll build a great big city from bricks we make.
We’ll build a great big city from bricks we make.
They were proud and forgot about God.

We’ll stay in the land of Shinar on this plain.
We’ll stay in the land of Shinar on this plain.
We’ll stay in the land of Shinar on this plain.
They were proud and forgot about God.

God came down and changed the way they talked!
God came down and changed the way they talked!
God came down and changed the way they talked!
Then He scattered them all over the Earth.

Remember to thank God for what you can do.
Remember to thank God for what you can do.
Remember to thank God for what you can do.
All your blessings come from Him.

    **********************************

    YES and NO People Song:

    There are YES people.
    There are YES people.
There are YES people who say,
“Yes, I’ll do the right thing!  YES! Every day!”

    There are NO people.
    There are NO people.
There are NO people who say,
“NO, I WON’T do the right thing!  NO! I'll do it my way!”

Point:  We need to mind God and do what he says.  The people building the tower were supposed to move to lots of different places instead of all just staying there.
